Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if therapy with you is right for me?

Great question! We will have the opportunity to have a 15-minute phone consultation before setting up the initial session together. During this phone call, you will have the chance to ask any questions you may have, and I’ll learn more about what brings you to therapy. Together, we can make an informed decision about whether it makes sense to begin therapy.

Sometimes, though, it’s difficult to know whether we’ll be a good fit based on a phone consultation alone. That’s why, during the first 1–2 sessions, we’ll talk about your goals, develop a treatment plan, and make sure that my approach feels like a good fit for your needs.

Finding the right therapist is important, and I encourage all of my clients to pay attention to how they feel in the therapy relationship. If either of us feels that I may not be the best clinical fit for you, we can talk openly about it. If needed, I’m happy to provide referrals to other therapists in the community who may be a better fit.

What’s it like to work with you?

I approach therapy with a warm, collaborative, and direct style. My goal is to offer a judgment-free space for clients to fully explore and express their thoughts and feelings. I intentionally keep a smaller practice in order to truly focus on each of my client’s individual goals and needs.

While we may consider a diagnosis when helpful for identifying the most effective, evidence-based treatment, I also recognize that no two people are the same. Each person brings their own unique combination of symptoms, history, experiences, strengths, and circumstances. I also believe your personal values are an important part of our work together, and I strive to incorporate what matters most to you into your treatment and goals.

I’m also very client-centered. I believe you are the expert on your own life. Rather than telling you what you should do or giving you a list of answers, I take the time to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and help you better understand yourself, your patterns, and your options. My goal is to empower you to make decisions that align with your values and feel right for your life.

What can I expect in my first therapy session?

During our first session, I want to get to know you as a whole person—not just the reason that brought you to therapy. We’ll talk about what is going on for you right now, what led you to seek therapy, and your background and history. This may include previous medical and mental health care, diagnoses, family and social history, education, cultural factors that are meaningful to you, and anything else you feel is important for me to understand about you.

Typically, we’ll spend the first 1–2 sessions completing this intake process, which may also include a diagnostic assessment. Once I have a better understanding of your needs and goals, we’ll work together to develop a treatment plan that feels appropriate for you.

We’ll also discuss how often we should meet. I’ll share my clinical recommendation for session frequency, and we’ll work together to find an approach that fits both your needs and your practical considerations, including your schedule and budget.

Do we have to meet weekly?

No! While weekly sessions may be helpful for some clients, therapy does not always have to happen every week. I have many clients who choose to meet every other week or even every 3–4 weeks, depending on their needs and goals.

We’ll discuss session frequency during our first sessions together. I’ll share my clinical recommendation based on what I think will be most helpful, and we’ll find an approach that works for you. I understand that scheduling and financial considerations can also affect how often you’re able to meet, and my goal is to meet you where you are.

Will I have to be in therapy the rest of my life?

No. My goal is not for you to stay in therapy indefinitely. The therapy I provide is evidence-based and focused on giving you practical skills, tools, and strategies that you can continue to use long after therapy ends.

The frequency and length of therapy are different for every person and depend on your goals, needs, and circumstances. Many clients make meaningful progress in a relatively focused course of therapy, and we’ll regularly assess your progress together to determine when you’re ready to transition out of therapy. Many of my clients will start weekly or bi-weekly and transition to meeting once every 3-6 weeks depending on their therapy goals and individual journey.

My hope is that you leave therapy feeling more confident in your ability to manage challenges on your own—not like you need therapy forever.

Do you take insurance?

No. I am a private-pay provider and do not contract directly with insurance companies. However, if your insurance plan offers out-of-network benefits, I can provide you with a superbill that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.

If you have questions about using out-of-network benefits or would like to discuss whether working together may be a good fit, we can talk more during a phone consultation.

For more information about my fees and out-of-network policy, please visit my Fees page.

Do you offer in-person therapy or telehealth?

I offer both! I also offer a hybrid approach, giving you the flexibility to decide whether you’d like to meet in person or virtually. In some cases, you can even make that decision on the day of your appointment.

My office is located at 7624 N. La Cholla Blvd, Tucson, AZ 85741 for in-person sessions. For telehealth, I use a HIPAA-compliant video platform. While I find video to be helpful for telehealth sessions, I also offer audio-only sessions by phone when preferred.

What would you be if you weren’t a psychologist?

I would work at a garden nursery, be a florist, or a baker! Or perhaps I’d own a cozy coffee shop, filled with plants, and good books. 🙂
